The Golborne Variations is a suite of Songs inspired by a street in North Kensington. Like producer and writer JC Carroll's previous record "New English Blues Volume 1" It is a concept album, a rock opera that explores and extrapolates a theme using a mixed media palette of sounds and musicians.
When Jennifer Pearl, Fort Lauderdale resident and aspiring singer, songwriter logged onto a musicians website to get some advice on what microphone to buy to demo her songs she had no idea she would end up being part of a team of musicians that include top session guitarists, Chester Kamen, Nigel Bennett, and Pink Floyd bass legend Guy Pratt. JC Carroll told her to buy something called a Snowball and as an after thought asked her to sing some lines over a beat he had just programmed. Jennifer obliged and sent thru mp3s of her singing what would become the 3rd movement of the Album that is the Golborne Variations.
7 Songs 7 Musicians and one idea to produce a piece of music that described an unique street not only the smells the flavours of that street but also the story of people living and working in there. This certainly is not your regular pop record its more a musical time capsule, Carroll is no stranger to songs about places his seminal "The Sound of the Suburbs" is still THE archetypal song about the english Suburbs. His Nw10 is a great song about divorce in Willesden and his Streets of Whitechapel is a Folk Hop Classic.
Stylistically and musically this album has more in common with a classic progressive rock album then Carroll's early Punk beginnings in his words. "I wanted to make an album that explored the corridor beyond the door left open by bands like Early Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown and Cream, bands thats had mutated rock into a new format ( which took the instruments and modes of the chicago blues and threw them into a pot that included Old English Music Jazz, Eastern Modes and Psychedelic pop) and made it into a new genre.
What he has made is a seamless 24 minutes are exciting music that flows for a simple folk beginning into arabic and electronic movements to climax in a stunning wig out...
Mixed by Human League Engineer and Programmer David M Allen on a Desk that Belonged to Connie Plank with amazing Bass Playing from Pink Floyd Bass Player Guy Pratt this album has classic pedigree.
